So how many people have heard about all these youtubers freaking out for demonetizing their videos without warning? It started out with Phillip DeFranco talking about finding out that he had been losing money for a year but it’s only now that youtube actually contacted him about it. And in fact when he appealed it, they remonetized it—it seems that an algorithm has been flagging youtube videos in a willy-nilly way. The guidelines are below.

Now the thing that is most chilling is the last one. I don’t know if you know about Philip DeFranco—he’s not a very provocative guy. He’s a liberalish moderate (in his words) who likes to report on the news. Like he’s so benign. Some rightwingers have tried to blame SJWers on this but DeFranco would not really be much of a consistent target for leftwing ire. Even more so, liberal news channel, Young Turks, have had even more videos flagged.

And so #youtubeisoverparty has been trending on twitter and multiple channels have talked about worrying how they’ll keep going, especially news oriented ones. People like ETC News wonder about their future when they are flagged and lose money when they don’t do anything wrong.

My theory here—and I’m sorry because I’m tired and this is not very long— is that they created some vague guidelines that they finally are really using to set limits on content. They seem like they finally want creators to know (have they been doing this for months and just didn’t bother telling anyone—this might be true).

I wonder if this is related to the creation of youtube red and wanting people on there. Creators have said that not only are they allowed to have dumb and offensive prank videos on youtube red without a problem but the people who have their videos demonetized, still get money from youtube red. Furthermore, youtube red allows youtube to get money from people who use ad-blocker. So the point is that if they can get more and more people on youtube red, more content created just for that platform and more support for it by big youtubers, the more paying subscribers they can get. There will be less wrangling with angry advertisers while also excluding people who don’t have the means to pay 12.50 a month for the videos. Just a theory though.
