Wonderfalls (2004)

Wonderfalls might be considered a “weird” show by some. But like the other shows I came up with when racking my brain for examples of weird, I consider it underappreciated and on the cusp of brilliant. I expect no less of a show created by genius Bryan Fuller (Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies, Hannibal and the much anticipated American Gods) and Todd Holland (Malcolm in the Middle and The Larry Sanders Show).

Wonderfalls is about an over-educated (Brown), unemployable (philosophy degree) GenXer (Caroline Dhavernas as Jaye Tyler) working in a Niagara Falls* souvenir shop. After almost choking to death on her lunch, inanimate objects (a wax lion, Billy Bass, lawn flamingos) begin speaking to and strongly pressuring her to do things.

Cancelled after only four episodes (although I think they burned through the rest of the episodes that summer or something as I recall watching them), I guess I’m not surprised few people were convinced to watch this show after viewing that trailer.

Also staring Tracie Thoms, Tyron Leitsom, Katie Finneran and Lee Pace, I highly recommend it to smart, super classy people like me. If you want to check out this most excellent series, full episodes can currently be found floating around youtube.

*It’s supposed to take place in Niagara Falls, New York but it was filmed in Niagara Falls, Ontario (as well as Toronto). Because Niagara Falls, New York (except for the Niagara Falls State Park which is lovely) is pretty much a shit hole. It’s a bit better these days than it was in 2003 but still rather sad considering what a giant tourist draw is right there. So all the scenes of the falls and the Rainbow bridge are the wrong way if you’re in the US.
