Welcome back to the 2015 Read Harder Challenge. We’re heading into the home stretch! How are your challenges coming along?
This month I read After The Quake, a series of short stories by Haruki Murakami, all set within the few months after the earthquake that rocked Kobe, Japan in 1995. I tend to like Murakami, but reading about 10 short stories about different characters and places, all with his odd dreamy writing style was just a bit too much.
I also read a book written by an author over 65: Memories of my Melancholy Whores by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. If you’re not aware of this book, it’s the story of a man who purchases a 14-year old virgin prostitute and, after finding her asleep on their first encounter, he becomes enchanted by her sleeping form and spends night after night watching her sleep. It was extremely short but I found myself disturbed and disgusted by it (which I believe was Garcia Marquez’ intent) so it took me a while to get through it.
