Hello! Since we’re doing a short story theme I thought I would share one of my favorite ones I’ve read. Ken Liu is more famous for his fantasy series The Dandelion Dynasty, which could be on track to be the next Big TV Show (should it get optioned).

However, if you haven’t read his short story The Paper Menagerie, you need to. Luckily Charlie Jane Anders published the whole thing on i09 a while ago so you can read it for free!

First published in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction in 2011, it was then included and put as the title for a collection of short stories printed last year. It is an incredibly moving story about assimilation, otherness, ethnic identity, family and maturing that strikes at the heart of parent/child relationships and how we view American-ness.

So give it a try if you haven’t read it. It’s worth the read.
