I’ve been a pessimistic little Cheeser lately , so I’ve been constantly searching for good news of any kind to lift my spirits (especially after this year). Let’s remember that 2016 wasn’t a total crapfest—it was also full of the amazing, wonderful, and life-affirming.
This is probably going to cause some eye rolls, but I’ve got to start with the best news to come from this year: WORLD SERIES CHAMPS, BAY-BAY.
Curse of the goat, yada yada yada, 108 years, etc. etc. In a year of utter shite, this makes me incredibly happy. My family and I got to witness something we’ve never seen before and thought we never would. My Grandma Cheeser was a die-hard Cubs fan; the Cubs clinched their Series berth on the 17th anniversary of her death. You bet your ass that I believe my grandma was helping her Cubbies win. There is also an incredibly doxy video of my family shouting “OH MY GOD!!!” that’s floating somewhere around Facebook.
The jobless rate is currently around 4.6%; this number was last recorded in August 2007. That beats the crap out of 2010 when it peaked at 10%. I am going to unironically say, “Thanks, Obama!”
WOMEN KICKED OLYMPIC ASS
Women won 27 out of the 46 gold medals for the U.S. Simone Biles KILLED it in gymnastics; her gold and bronze at Rio made her the most decorated U.S. gymnast at any single event. Katie Ledecky smashed records and hauled home some serious hardware. Allyson Felix now has six track gold medals—the most by ANY woman from ANY country. Simone Manuel won the 100m freestyle and became the first female African-American swimmer to win individual gold while representing the U.S. Kim Rhode has medaled in SIX straight Olympics in skeet shooting. Get it!
THERE ARE GOOD PEOPLE OUT THERE
There are waaaaay too many stories of people just being so damn DECENT, but here are a few: the angels of love who blocked the WBC at funerals of Pulse victims; these dentists who donated over $1 million in free dental care; this young man worked while recovering from injuries so he could make money for homeless people; these two Olympic runners helped each other finish a race.
A BUNCH OF GOOD STUFF ABOUT HEALTH
Check this out! People are smoking less, cancer rates are dropping, and there may soon be a vaccine for HIV.
This is just a minuscule look at the wonderful events of the year. Add to it! What else happened that was amazing?
