One thing that’s interesting as a software dev is the desire for obsolescence for various platforms. How long did we wait for IE 6 usage to decline? When will we realize a future where Flash is fully replaced by HTML5? Obsolescence means no longer tailoring custom solutions to platforms that make it hard for us to do our jobs. The goal is to get from point A to point B and technologies that cling to life despite wearing out their welcome get in the way constantly.

I’m off today to try to make part of my own company’s software obsolete by creating the hot new thing that we’ll sell to our own customers. We’re always searching for ways to make our own work obsolete. I’ve made many things obsolete as part of my job (thankfully not employees as far as I’m aware) - my own software, other people’s software. That cycle won’t stop and the only thing I can hope for is to continue to be a part of it.
