Dog's Skin Ripped Away

Yep, it’s just as bad as it sounds.

Sunday, my dog got caught on a piece of protruding metal, and a hunk of his skin— about the size of a half-dollar— was ripped away down to the fat and muscle. There wasn’t much bleeding. I looked on the Internet, and the suggested remedy was to put an antibiotic on it and basically leave it open. I put Neosporin on it and left it unbandaged, and I’ve been watching Freddie to see if there are any signs of infection. So far, so good. He hasn’t been sluggish or had a temperature, and the wound doesn’t show signs of pussing or swelling. The last couple of days he has been licking the wound more (I try to make sure he doesn’t obsessively lick it), so I’m ASSUMING the wound is itching and healing.

Do any of you have any experience with this kind of thing? Am I doing the right thing? How long does it take this kind of injury to heal? What will it look like? What should I be looking out for? I will take him to the vet this weekend to make sure he’s okay and that nothing more needs to be done, but I’d like to hear from anyone who has had a pup with this kind of injury.
