Hello, BALKers! Tonight's Midnight Movie is the fantasy dramedy Peggy Sue Got Married, directed by Francis Ford Coppola and starring that marvelously husky voiced dame Kathleen Turner as well as Mr. Nicolas "You mean my wang?" Cage himself! It also features early performances from Jim Carrey, Joan Allen, and Hellen Hunt. Turner was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance; the film also received nominations for Best Cinematography and Best Costume Design. Entertainment Weekly rated Peggy Sue Got Married #17 on their "50 Best High School Movies" ranking, and Siskel and Ebert included it in their "Best of 1986" list.
This meta-nostalgic time traveling film, which begins in the 1980s and jumps back to the 1950s, is really wonderful and also has a great soundtrack (if you're fond of doo-wop and oldies that is). The parts with the grandparents just kill me, and Nicolas Cage is a hoot as a vain aspiring teen idol in gold lamé. But Kathleen Turner is, of course, the real star here and turns in a performance that is both introspective and funny. Have a lovely evening + enjoy the show!
I love you, Pehhhg-ahhhhy!
