Gawker's Jacob Clifton Pens Sci-Fi Novella While You Are Over There

Update: You can read my full interview with Jacob Clifton here.

We all know him as the man behind Morning After, but it turns out Mr. Jacob Clifton is also a serious sci-fi enthusiast, and being SPACE WEEK on BackTalk, I thought I'd share a little bit about his "found footage sci-fi" novella, which I had the pleasure of binge reading this past week.

In my own words, While You Are Over There unravels the details of a harrowing event in the lives of Jonah Hope and Kirby Brendan, two scientists who just so happen to be gay, married to one another, pop-culture TV stars, fathers of an artificial intelligence baby and part-time astronauts. If that isn't enough of a hook, I don't know if we can be friends. Life is relatively swell for these two dashing scientists until their "child" Halley informs them there is a problem they must address with her up in outer space...

The story is told through snippets of "found footage" passages resembling documentary shots you might find lying on the floor of an editing room, which makes for a very unique epistolary I've never encountered before. I don't want to give too much else away because the joy of this 25,000 word story is really captured in the unpacking of the deeply intimate, complicated, and at times painful relationship these two men share with one other, and just as intimately, with the world. Jacob has also generously agreed to do an interview in the future, so I want to hold off on getting into more juicy bits until then. Selfish, I know, but it's for the greater good.

If you think it sounds like something you'd enjoy and want to be read up before I post the interview, head on over to Gumroad.com where Jacob is selling the novella on a name-your-own-fair-price basis. I think it's worth it!
